Must Read books for Non Readers

Updated: Apr 22, 2019

I have come across several people who haven't experienced the joy that reading brings. This is usually because they don't have time to read, or just don't have a long enough attention span to commit, but let me tell you, there is a book out there for everyone. With the millions of titles out in the world, there has to be something that catches your eye. I think that everyone is a reader, some just haven't found their favourite book yet.

Now, hear me out: I am 100% convinced that I can find a book for anyone, here are a few suggestions...

1. The Alchemist:

This novel tells the story of a very young shepherd who is able to find treasure, amounts to which were unimaginable. On his journey, he learns the importance of following his heart, and that dreams and goals are not just a piece of him, but also of the universe. The constant theme in the novel is to persue your dreams by doing what your heart desires. With every obstacle that one faces, there is a lesson the be leared.

Paulo Coelho says "When you want something, the universe conspires to help you achieve it."

2. Harry Potter:

This is a series that is constantly talked and raved about. Honestly, if you haven't read this series, you need to. Basically, it is about a boy named Harry Potter (obviously...) and his adventures while he attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We follow Harry through potions, charms, and flying classes and we also stick with him during the dangers that present themselves in the wizarding world. The series illicits magic, fantasy, and sparks imagination in readers. The series sends a message to readers about the importance of standing up for what they believe in, even if all odds are against them. J.K Rowling wrote "We don't need magic to trasnform our world. We carry all the power we need inside us."

3. The Fault in Our Stars:

This lovely, heartwarming novel tells the story of 16 year old Hazel Grace Lancaster who is a lung cancer patient. Throughout the book we see Hazel meet and fall in love with a boy named Augustus Waters from her cancer support group. The two share the same sarcastic wit and a love of books. As their story together develops, readers begin to understand the underlying message- live and embrace life to the fullest. It is not a simple love story between two teenagers, it is a love story about life itself.

4. Crazy Rich Asians:

This trilogy tells the story of Rachel Chu, a University economics professor from New York. Rachel travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young for his best friend's wedding. Rachel, then, discovers a secret that Nick has keep deeply buried within him---his family is extremely (when I say extremely I mean overwhelmingly) wealthy and is seen as Asia's most eligible bachelor. It is filled with hilarious exchanges, romance, and even some helpful notes from the author. As it is a trilogy, it means there is more to their story, and that also means that there will be more of Nick Young... and who wouldn't want that?

5. The Book Thief:

This book highlights the story of young orphan, Liesel Meminger, who is growing up in Germany during WWII. Liesel develops a newfound comfort in words and reading, despite the fact that the Nazis want to burn every book they can get their hands on. This novel is different from the rest. It is narrated by Death, who is smart, witty, and gives the reader his opinion on the idea and concepts of death and dying. The book has several themes such as death as a part of life, friendship, love, and survival. Markus Zusak wrote "It amazes me what humans can do, even when streams are running down their faces and they stagger on, coughing and searching, and finding." It is filled with humour, tears, and it sends a message to readers about how times can be really hard sometimes, but that there are also ways to make the best of the worst situations.

These books offer something for everyone. Whether you are looking for romance, humour, or just something to pass them time, there are so many options out there. It may take some intense searching and digging, but don't stop looking. If you don't look, you won't find what it is you're looking for. If you're struggling to find a good book, send me a message and I'll try to help you find something you'll love...
