1910. Joanna Blalock unknowingly is the product of a sole assignation between the later Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler.
After the nurse and her ten-year-old son see a man fall to his death in an apparent suicide, elderly Dr. John Watson and his charming handsome son Dr. John Watson Jr. invite her to join their detective team.
From hidden treasure to the Second Afghan War of 1878-1880, the group devise an ingenious plan to catch a murderer in the act while dodging Scotland Yard, the British Aristocracy.
I had always seen The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes on the shelves in book stores but for some reason had never picked it up until recently. Boy, am I glad that I did, because I discovered a whole world that I never could imagine existing. I suppose it's all elementary after that.
Seeing such a strong female character in such a time as 1910 really struck me. It's different but so refreshing at the same time. In a time that was prominently male dominated, seeing a female with such skill and power really brought a unique aspect to the book. I think it really made the book what it was. Joanna was literally Sherlock Holmes, just a woman. Just as much of an icon as her father. She's just all in all brilliant.
Something that also brought it home for me was the relationship between Dr. Watson Jr. and Joanna. From the get go, John was always so supportive and amazed by Joannas abilites. He never seemed to underestimate her and what she could do, which shows that he is definitely wise beyond his years. He's what you coulld call, a "modern" man. They worked really well together, and seemed to make a really great team. I won't give too much away, as far as their relationship goes, but what John says about Joanna in the "Closing Notes" section of the novel, really made me smile and made me come to a conclusion that this has to be one of my favourite books of all time.
You can also see so many similarities between Sherlock and Watson's relationship vs. John and Joanna's partnership. They both contribute unique viewpoints in investigations and they seem to always want to be there for each other. The bond that they both have with each other really seems life long and unbreakable. It's always fun to read parts like these and pull out cute moments where they mesh so well together.
If you read this, which you most definitely should, you'll notice that it was narrated or written from Watson Jr.'s point of view. The way he writes completely resembles that of his father in the original Sherlock stories and his tone just makes the book so much more enjoyable to read. He describes things in detail, but not too much, and the way he makes reference to Joanna makes me set relationship standards way too high. I need a Watson in my life, badly...
The chapters are such a nice length and were really easy to read, which is what I like when it comes to books.
Well, my dear bookworms, those are my thoughts. Whether you chose to pick up the book or not is your choice, but i'm telling you that if you do, you absolutely will not regret it one bit. That's a fact.
