A lot of the time when people are turned off, or not interested in reading, its probably because they don't know how to pick a book that would suit them. I understand how it could be a tricky process, but let me tell you, there's nothing to it.... Here are a few things you could consider before choosing a book:
1. Chose to read what you like- it seems pretty simple, and I know that it isn't always, but if you know what you like, picking a book should be a breeze. If you like dragons, there are millions of books out there about dragons and fantasy. If you like boy bands (I was the biggest One Direction fan on the planet, btw) there are tons out there.... you just have to look for them. If you read what you like, you'll be more interested and may actually enjoy yourself while you read.
2. Take recommendations from friends and family- getting recommendations from anyone about books can actually be really beneficial for your choice. When a person recommends a book, they do so for reason. They recommended it to you because they got something out of it and connected with it so much that it was worth mentioning. Hearing the opinions of others can allow you to get different perspectives, and it allows for potential readers to approach it with a different mindset.
3. Read the synopsis- I don't suggest judging a book by its cover and going into a book completely blind. To give you a general idea as to the preimse of the book, there is usally a synopsis (aka description) on the back cover or on the inside front cover. While it is brief, it does a good job of explaining what you should expect from the book, which is very, very helpful.
These tips should help you when the time comes to chose a novel, whether it be for a school essay or just for fun. There is a book out there for everyone, it's just a matter of finding it.
This is all such great advice! My adult nephew was never a reader as a kid or into his twenties, but a few years ago I realized he'd really enjoy Ender's Game, so I handed him a copy. He loved it, and though he still didn't become an avid reader, he did become an avid listener of audio books while he was trail running, and listened to the whole rest of the series. A good book recommendation can change your life!
