What Happened That Night

This chilling thriller is Gone Girl meets Pretty Little Liars- where the turns keep twisting and the story keeps unfolding to its shocking conclusion...

Clara Porterfield has always been in love woth neighborhood golden boy Griffin Tomlin, so why did her older sister, Emily, kill him? No one can understand except Clara, who blames herself for revealing a secret she swore she would never tell.

This book was sent to me by my friends at Smith Publicity, and I am beyond grateful. It was originally published on an online writing platform called Wattpad (I believe) and it was then published by Wattpad Books- the company that went from the screen to the shelves. I grew up on Wattpad so it was cool to witness the switch from an online platform to paper books.

I loved this. I thought it was a great read. There was romance, thrill, and some humour which is helpful when things get a little too dark, too fast. The characters were teenagers, and the readers really got insight into all the drama involved in high school- which i absolutely DON'T miss. The rumours, toxicity, and immaturity written in was really accurate and it really added to the appeal of the book. I feel like any book about high school life would be pretty interesting, but add murder on top of that and it becomes about a hundred times more appealing for some reason.

The idea that Clara lived with a murderer made the atmosphere really tense which was cool to read. I mean, all the scenes that took place in the home or among the family, the reader could really sense the tension between the girl's parents and each other. Even with other people in the neighborhood, the reader could really sense the dirty looks and animosity that they had towards the Porterfields. It was one of those plots where I could insert myself into the story and deal with everything that the characters dealt with. I find that reading becomes a more enjoyable experience when someone can connect with it or can almost interact with it. It makes everything eway more fun.

The idea for the story was a really good one. it was unique and I don't think I've read anything like it before, especially when the main character lives with the killer. I thought that aspect was really cool. I really liked Griffin's character. He was your typical high school hot shot- good looking, popular, athletic, and every girl's dream boyfriend. I'd probably be swooning with those girls, but I know a lot more about Griffin than they do. He was awful to Clara, and one of thsoe guys known as a "heartbreaker". I think the contrast between himself and Clara really added to the dynamic of the plot and allowed for it to be really entertaining.

Thrillers always get to me. They're probably one of my favourites to pick up. The world of teenagers is dark and dangerous- Deanna captured that essence well.

Thanks to Smith Publicity and Deanna for giving me access to such a wonderful novel, and thanks to all of you for allowing me to share my thoughts with you. It's my absolute favourite thing to do.

Much love my darlings!!
